Urtica dioica. Actions: diuretic, astringent, haemostatic, circulatory stimulant. Nettles are a rich source of vitamin C., iron, sodium, chlorophyll, proteïne and dietary fibre. This makes them ideal for use as a spring tonic and general blood cleanser and conditioner. Excellent for anaemia, because of their high iron and vitamin C. content, which ensures that the iron is absorbed efficiently by the body. Nettles will stimulate the circulation, which makes them ideal for conditions such as laminitis, rheumatism and arthritis. A wash made from the nettle can be used as a rinse for your horse`s manes and tails; and when nettles are fed internally they encourage `dappling` on your horse`s coat. Remember: nettles are a blood tonic, and some horse owners may find that they have the action of livening up their horse ! DOSAGE: 20 to 30 grams daily.
CAUTION: some horses can react to nettles and will come out in a ’nettle rash’. This is shown as small raised lumps under the horse’s coat. Luckily this condition is not long lasting and will normally disappear within 24 hours. However, if you know your horse is sensitive then be cautious, and discontinue use if a reaction occurs.
